Originating from the Henan Grand Academy, which was founded in 1902, Henan Agricultural University was named Henan Agricultural College in 1952 before being given its current name in 1984.

With a floor space of 281.35 hectares, the university has three campuses: two in Zhengzhou and one in Henan's Xuchang.

The university has set up 20 colleges and departments, offering 76 undergraduate degree programs across 10 disciplines: agronomy, engineering, science, economics, management, law, literature, medicine, education and art. It also has one national level key discipline, 19 key disciplines at ministerial and provincial level, six post-doctoral research stations, nine first-level disciplines for doctoral degrees and 18 for master's degrees.

The university has 2,162 faculty members, including 757 with senior professional titles and 865 with doctoral degrees, as well as one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, two recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 40 specialists entitled to the State Council Special Allowance.

Focusing on scientific research and development, the university has set up seven international and national research platforms, as well as 70 at ministerial and provincial level, all of which made great contributions to local economic and social development.
