Originating from Bailudong Academy, or White Deer Cave Academy, in Jiangxi province, Jiangxi Normal University was given its current name in 1983. It is the oldest ordinary institution of higher learning in Jiangxi offering undergraduate education.

Covering more than 233 hectares, the university has two campuses: Yaohu and Qingshanhu. It has a library collection of over 3.23 million paper books, and nearly 3.5 million e-books.

The university has 23 professional colleges, and one independent college, and offers 89 undergraduate degree programs, covering 10 disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art. It has nine first-tier disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 31 first-tier disciplines to confer master's degrees, and five postdoctoral research stations. One subject, chemistry, is listed in the top 1 percent of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global subject ranking.

There are nearly 30,000 full-time undergraduate students, and some 500 graduate and doctoral students at the university. At the headquarters are 2,630 faculty members, including 1,750 full-time teachers and 818 doctors. Among the distinguished professors are three academicians, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and four scholars who are listed in the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project.

In recent years, the university has actively engaged in international communication and exchanges, and established cooperative relationships with more than 100 colleges and universities, and research institutions in 20 countries and regions. It has also enrolled international students from over 30 countries and regions, and set up a series of key laboratories with some renowned international and domestic scientific research teams and institutions. It is also one of the universities given approval to enroll foreign students with Chinese government scholarships, Jiangxi provincial government scholarships, and Confucius Institute scholarships.
