Anhui province lies in the monsoonal area of East China and is an important part of several key national development strategies, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. Anhui province is at the crossroads linking China's eastern, central and western regions through a comprehensive transport system of waterways, highways, railways and airports. Being the sub-center of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, the province will set up a modern and three-dimensional transport system by 2020.

From 2012 to 2017, Anhui's investment in transport infrastructure reached 428.6 billion yuan ($62.3 billion), with 32 expressway projects and 16 key waterway projects completed.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), Anhui's total investment in transport construction will amount to 694 billion yuan, of which 360 billion yuan will be used for railway construction (including 95 billion yuan for urban rail traffic construction), 270 billion yuan for highways, 30 billion yuan for channels and ports, 10 billion for civil aviation, 6 billion yuan for pipeline transport, and 18 billion yuan for comprehensive transport junctions.
