Taicang, a county-level city in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, will ramp up its efforts to develop its 5G industry, according to a strategic cooperation agreement recently inked between the local municipal government and the Suzhou branch of China Telecom.

The Suzhou branch plans to establish 105 base stations in the city's downtown area, High-Tech Development Zone and University Science Park to pilot advanced technology in intelligent manufacturing, intelligent transportation and smart industry.

The 5G technology will then be applied to public services, medical care, education, hydraulic engineering and environmental protection.

Based on emerging technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and cloud computing, the company will also help construct Taicang into a smart city.

A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic IoT sensors to collect data and then uses the data to manage assets and resources efficiently.
