Hebei Medical University was founded in Tianjin in 1894 by Li Hongzhang, a political heavyweight in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and was the first government-run Western medical college in modern China.

The college was upgraded into a university and started enrolling undergraduates in 1913. In 1915 it was moved to Baoding, Hebei province and then to Shijiazhuang in 1958. In 1995, it was merged with two other medical colleges and renamed as Hebei Medical University.

Currently, the university has two campuses, and five directly affiliated hospitals. With 18 secondary schools, it offers 24 majors for bachelor degrees, of which four are national-level characteristic disciplines, 16 are national key specialties, and four are provincial featured ones.

The university also hosts four postdoctoral research stations for preclinical medicine, clinical medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, and biology, six doctoral degree programs for first-rank disciplines, and 52 authorized master degree specialties.

There are 13,795 full-time students at the university, and more than 15,000 teaching and administrative staff members, including 107 of them enjoying the governmental special allowance awarded by the State Council, 1,096 owning senior titles, and 1,654 having sub-senior titles.

Besides the five directly affiliated hospitals, the university also boasts five indirectly affiliated hospitals, five teaching hospitals, and 28 practice bases, with the teaching beds reaching 25,000.

The university has been strengthening its international communication and cooperation in recent years and has become an important window for cultural and academic exchanges with foreign countries in Hebei province.

It has set up close partnership with 27 medical colleges and universities and scientific research institutions in 12 countries, including Japan, the United States, South Korea, France, and Belgium. There are now 413 foreign students studying at the university.
