Shihezi University

Located in the “Garden City”, Shihezi, north of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, Shihezi University was founded in April 1996 through the integration of institutional colleges by the Ministry of Education and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

Shihezi University is a comprehensive university which in August 2000 the central government designated as a key institution to be developed in northwestern China. Shihezi University was ranked among the universities in the “211 project” on Dec 31, 2008. It is a First-Class Discipline University of the Chinese Ministry of Education.

The campus covers 1,870,000 square meters, with 950,000 sq m of buildings and 170,000 sq m of laboratories. The library has a collection of 2.9 million Chinese and foreign books and periodicals, and is only model project library in Xinjiang, and is part of the State High-tech Project 863. It has a book collection spot for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

At Shihezi University, students are offered 10 specialties: agriculture, medicine, engineering, economics and trade, management, literature and arts, science, education, law, and history. It has 21 colleges, offering four doctorate degrees, 52 master's degrees, 66 bachelor's degrees, one pre-university senior middle school program, five specialties that enroll on-job-teachers for master's degrees, one postdoctoral scientific work station and two postdoctoral mobile stations.

The university has jointly set up graduate education bases with Peking University and Tianjin University.

It has 2,611 staff members. There are 1,560 full-time teachers including a specially engaged academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 166 professors, 489 associate professors, 58 experts and scholars who have received outstanding achievement awards at national or provincial level, and 80 distinguished experts and scholars receiving special subsidies from the government. It employs more than 10 foreign experts and teachers every year.

More than 30,200 students are currently studying at the university, including 22,635 undergraduates, 2,120 postgraduates and 245 international students from countries such as United States, India, Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
