Founded in 1902 as the University of Shaanxi, Northwest University (NWU) got its current name in 1921. In 1978, NWU was designated as a national key university, and was one of the first batch of universities to be rated as having first-class disciplines and to be a national Project 211 development university.

Currently NWU boasts three campuses – Chang'an, Taibai and Taoyuan – all of which cover 157 hectares. The university has 23 colleges and departments and a graduate school, offering 89 undergraduate degree programs. As a national key university, it has 24 first-tier disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 37 master's degrees in first-tier disciplines, and 14 categories of professional programs.

Supported by more than 2,800 faculty members, including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 20 winners of the Changjiang Scholars Program, nine winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 14 scholars who are enlisted in the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, and four Nationally Distinguished Teachers, the university has won a wide range of national awards, such as one first-tier national key discipline, four second-tier national key disciplines, 22 centers for postdoctoral studies, and one national key laboratory. It also has 39 provincial and ministerial-level key scientific research bases for science and engineering, and 17 for humanities and social sciences.
