Xi'an International Studies University (XISU) was one of the first four foreign language colleges established in New China. Founded in 1951 as a Russian specialized college, the school got its current name in 2006, and in 2011, it was listed as a high-level university under the Twelfth Five-Year Plan by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government.
Over the past 68 years, the university has developed into a specialized multidisciplinary university offering foreign language teaching and research, and an important base to cultivate foreign language talents in western China.
XISU has two campuses, Yanta and Chang'an, and covers 106 hectares. The library collection covers 32 languages, including Chinese, English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese and Arabic. There are 1,527 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals, and 42 Chinese and foreign literature databases.
There are 21 colleges, departments and other teaching institutions, with a first-level degree authorization point for doctoral degrees in foreign languages and literatures, 13 second-level doctoral programs and a postdoctoral research station. The school has 56 undergraduate majors, and seven undergraduate minors, covering literature, economics, management, law, pedagogy, natural science and arts. XISU has 20,000 doctoral students, master's students, undergraduates, foreign students and various types of training students.
Over the years, the school has developed international exchanges and communication with 249 universities and research institutions from 44 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Spain, Australia and Canada, and hosted a wide range of academic exchanges and cooperation.
It has been actively involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, and set up a Central Asia Institute to recruit international students from Central Asian countries. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school cooperated with the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to establish an international joint program to train high-level undergraduate students majoring in Arabic language and literature.
