Xi'an Jiaotong University

As one of the earliest and most renowned institutions of higher education in China, Xi'an Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. Founded in 1896 in Shanghai, the university was moved to Xi'an in 1956, and in 2000, it merged with Xi'an Medical University and Shaanxi Finance and Economics College.

It was also in the first batch of universities to enter the national 211 and 985 projects. In 2017, it was selected as a first-class university and class A construction college in the list of double first-class constructions announced by the State, and eight of its disciplines were selected as first-class construction disciplines.

The school has four campuses – Xingqing, Yanta, Qujiang and China Western Science and Technology Innovation Port – covering about 533 hectares and a total construction area of 4.2 square kilometers. The library, with a collection of more than 5.63 million books, was approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee as Qian Xuesen Library.

The school is a comprehensive research university with science and engineering characteristics covering 10 disciplines: science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, philosophy, education and art. It has 26 colleges and departments, nine undergraduate academies and 20 affiliated teaching hospitals. The university has 6,137 faculty members, including 3,081 full-time teachers. Among the faculty members, there are 45 academicians of the two academies, six Nationally Distinguished Teachers, 93 distinguished professors on the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 42 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 23 National Experts with Outstanding Contributions.

By the end of 2018, the university had 40,346 full-time students, of whom 19,629 were graduate students. It offers 87 undergraduate degree programs, 43 master's degrees in first-tier disciplines, 32 doctoral degrees in first-tier disciplines, and 25 postdoctoral stations. It has eight national key disciplines, five national key laboratories, and seven national engineering (technical) research centers.

According to data released by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), as of May 2019, 14 of the university's disciplines had entered the top 1 percent of the world's academic institutions, and two disciplines had entered the top one thousand.

Xi'an Jiaotong University's foreign student education has actively promoted international communication and cooperation since 1959, establishing cooperative relationships with nearly 300 colleges and universities, and research institutions in 44 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Italy. The school had more than 2,800 foreign students from 136 countries and regions in 2018.
