Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL), which was established in 1948, is an institute of higher education directly administrated by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
Economics, law and management are the core disciplines of the university and are coordinated with six other disciplines: philosophy, literature, history, science, engineering and art.
ZUEL is also one of the universities sponsored by the 211 Project and the 985 Project Innovation Platform, which represent the Chinese government's efforts to strengthen institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority. ZUEL has two campuses: the Nanhu campus on the banks of picturesque Nanhu lake and another at the foot of Yellow Crane Tower, a prestigious historic site in Wuhan.
The university covers 187 hectares and has a combined floor space of 1.1 million square meters. ZUEL was one of the first 100 universities to provide internet coverage over its campus. The university has over 7.8 million volumes in its libraries and 4.6 million e-books. The auditorium is comparable to a professional theater and the unit dormitories stand side by side.
ZUEL has abundant qualified teachers and has achieved striking scientific and research results. The university has 20 schools: Marxism, Philosophy, Economics, Public Finance and Taxation, Finance, Law, Criminal Justice, Foreign Languages, Journalism and Cultural Communication, Business Administration, Accounting (Center of MPAcc), Public Administration (MPA Center), Statistics and Mathematics, Information Security Engineering, Wenlan School, Intellectual Property Rights, MBA, Continuing Education (School of Online Education), International Education, and the China and South Korea Institute of New Media (DSU).
The university has over 2,400 staff members, among whom are about 1,500 full-time teachers. There are over 270 professors, more than 580 associate professors and over 200 doctoral supervisors. The university has one nationwide famous teacher in higher education, 77 experts enjoying the special allowances of the State Council, 30 provincial New Century High-level Talents of Hubei Province, 48 awarded as Young Experts Who Make an Outstanding Contribution to Hubei province and who enjoy a Special Government Allowance of Hubei Province.
At present, the university has 56 undergraduate programs, 15 first-level master's programs, 89 secondary master's programs, six first-level doctoral programs, 53 secondary doctoral programs and six post-doctoral programs.
ZUEL has a comprehensive training system and high teaching quality. It serves over 20,000 full-time undergraduate students, over 7,000 graduate students, over 1,000 doctoral candidates, over 10,000 adult students and over 400 international students are admitted every year. ZUEL, with economics, law and management as its core disciplines, coordinating with other disciplines, has developed a comprehensive talents training system by strengthening advantage disciplines, building brand majors, promoting high-quality curriculums, providing high-quality textbooks and improving more qualified teachers.
ZUEL has made active exchanges with other countries, enjoying higher levels of internationalization. In international academic communications, the university has built wide relationships in international cooperation and research and academic communication with over 100 colleges and scientific and research institutions in over 20 countries and regions across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.
The university has built Confucius Institutes with Stony Brook University of the United States. An exchange student program has been launched with Stony Brook University, the University Hamburg from Germany, France’s University of Cergy-Pontoise, the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce International du Pas-de-Calais and the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Oita University fin Japan, the University of Iceland, the University of Lapland, the University of Tampere in Finland, National Taipei University, National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, and Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan.
Sino-foreign educational cooperation programs have also been held at ZUEL with the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, University of West Georgia, University of Canterbury in New Zealand, Australia’s Curtin University and ESC Rennes School of Business in France. In addition, international students from over 70 countries and regions have come to the university for further study.
