Built in 1959 and opened to the public in 1993, Shenyang Botanical Garden was listed as a national 5A tourist attraction in 2001. It is home to the largest array of botanical species in Northeast China. Occupying 246 hectares, the garden stands on rolling hills with green pines and cypresses, and luxuriant blossoms making a rich display. More than 20 special gardens have been built to host different genera and ecological habitats. So far, more than 1,700 genera of flora have been displayed.
The huge coastal Xinghai Square is located in the southern beach scenic area of Dalian, Liaoning province. Completed on June 20, 1997, the square was built to celebrate the return of Hong Kong. Now, it is a landmark in Dalian city. With a central avenue running through it, the oval square is at least twice as large as Tiananmen Square. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful seaside scenery and night views at the square. Surrounding the square are musical fountains, which play at night from time to time, delighting residents on their evening walks.
