The predecessor of Shandong Mental Health Center is the Shandong Mental Hospital founded in 1954. The hospital received its current name in 1993. In June 2015, it was rated as a 3A-grade hospital, the highest level of China's three-tier grading system for public hospitals, by the province's Health Commission.
The hospital, offering mental health-themed medical treatment, teaching and training, scientific research, disease prevention, drug or alcohol rehabilitation, judicial expertise and psychological counseling, is the only provincial-level hospital in the province that specializes in mental illness.
Situated in the northern foot of Yanzi Mountain in Jinan, the hospital enjoys beautiful natural scenery and a good environment, covering a combined floor area of more than 54,000 square meters.
The hospital has been strengthening its construction of hardware facilities. The over 20,000-sq-m outpatient complex building is near completion. Equipment for modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT), biofeedback therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, eye movement monitor, and digital x-ray machines were introduced to ensure rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients.
The hospital currently has more than 30 clinical and medical science departments and 14 wards, and holds 750 patient beds. It employs nearly 500 staff members, of which 103 have senior titles.
As a teaching hospital for Shandong University, the hospital is the training center for the university's masters' and doctoral degree programs of psychiatry and mental health. It also undertakes the teaching, internship and postgraduate training tasks for several other universities and colleges in the province, such as Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taishan Medical University, Jining Medical University, and Shandong Medical College.
The hospital has been promoting communication with domestic and foreign exchanges renowned hospital and experts. It has been organizing the province’s conferences on mental health, and held the World Health (WHO) Organization Adolescent Mental Health Summit.
Every year, it receives experts and scholars from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong for academic exchanges, and also sends its members to foreign countries for further study.
