Enjoying the joint sponsorship of and co-constructed by the State Oceanic Administration and the People's Government of Guangdong province, Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU) was established as a provincial key institution specializing in fishery and marine disciplines. 

With 77 years of history, GDOU is now recognized as a multidisciplinary oceanic university which focuses on marine and fishery sciences and coordinates the development of science, engineering, agriculture, humanities, economics, management, law, and education. Of all these disciplines, the applied sciences enjoy the predominate position. GDOU has cultivated over 100,000 excellent practical talents for society since its foundation, giving force to the development of Guangdong province as well as South China Sea studies and exploration.

GDOU has three campuses serving different functions, including the main campus, Xiashan campus and Haibin campus, covering a total area of 4,911 acres. The main campus, where most of the classes are given, is located near Huguang Rock, a world renowned volcanic geo-park.

GDOU is academically organized into 18 colleges, 26 research institutes, one self-contained college (Cunjin College) and one department for Ideological and Political Theory Teaching. The 18 colleges include the College of Fisheries Science, College of Food Science and Technology, College of Marine Sciences and Meteorology, College of Agricultural Science, College of Engineering, College of Economics and Management, College of Navigation, College of Information Technology, College of Software Engineering, College of Science, College of Humanities, College of Law, College of Foreign Studies, College of Political Science and Public Administration, College of Sports and Leisure Studies, College of Art (co-founded with the China National Song & Dance Ensemble), College of Vocational Education, and College of Continuing Education. 

GDOU is now establishing three first class disciplines for doctoral degrees and has three provincial key disciplines. It has 22 master's degree programs, 64 undergraduate majors and 39 majors for vocational programs, including eight featured provincial specialties, two provincial leading specialties and one provincial key major.

GDOU has 1,100 teachers and researchers, of which there are over 500 senior professional title holders, 225 doctorate holders, and three academicians. Currently, GDOU has a student population of over 50,000, among which around 28,000 undergraduates, postgraduates and international students live on the main campus and about 12,000 students in Cunjin College.

GDOU now has one national experimental teaching demonstration center, 30 provincial and ministerial level scientific research platforms, 13 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 21 departmental key laboratories, one national university students' off-campus practice education base, 17 provincial class-level college students practice teaching bases, five Guangdong province joint training graduate bases, and 98 school-level teaching and research laboratories. 

In the past five years, GDOU has undertaken a total of 2,425 scientific research projects, including 286 national-level projects, and has received research funding totaling 740 million yuan. It has gained 29 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological awards and 590 authorized patents. 

GDOU perseveres in substantive cooperation and exchange for research and academic studies both domestically and internationally, enjoying longstanding, in-depth partnerships with universities in over 30 countries and regions, including in countries like the UK, Australia and Japan, and regions like Hong Kong and Taiwan. 

GDOU, being the only ocean university in the South China Sea area, is expected to cultivate high-level professionals in marine science and technology, advancing marine science and technological innovation.
