The predecessor of the University of Jinan was Shandong Institute of Building Materials which was founded in 1948. In October 2000, the University of Jinan was officially established under the approval of the Ministry of Education by the merger of Shandong Institute of Building Materials and another college. In 2013, the university became a comprehensive university jointly established by the Shandong provincial government and the Ministry of Education.
The university now has three campuses in Jinan city, covering a total area of 2.43 million square meters. Its library, with an area of 63,000 sq m, has more than 8 million books in its collection, and over 4,200 Chinese and foreign periodicals.
The university has 24 schools, with 93 majors for bachelors, covering economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, engineering, medicine, management and art.
The University of Jinan has been expanding cooperation and exchanges with overseas educational institutions in recent years. It has established inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with 93 colleges and universities in the United States, England, Germany, Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and other countries. Three Confucius Institutes have been set up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as South Dakota and Colorado in the United States.
