The predecessor of Zaozhuang University was the Zaozhuang Teacher Training School, which was founded in 1971. In 1984, the school was upgraded to a normal specialized postsecondary college by the Shandong Provincial Government. In 2004, it was transformed into a full-time public undergraduate institute of higher education with the approval of the Ministry of Education and renamed Zaozhuang University.
The university now covers a combined floor area of 410,000 square meters, while its new campus, which is under construction, has a planning area of 790,000 sq m. The total value of its fixed assets is 960 million yuan ($139 million), of which 170 million yuan is for teaching and research equipment.
By January 2019, the university had 23 schools and departments, offering 57 majors for postgraduates and 38 for junior college students. The majors cover literature, science and engineering, management, pedagogy, history, economics, law and art.
Being a provincial joint training base for postgraduates since 2009, the university has been allowed to jointly cultivate postgraduates and doctoral students with the Institute of Laser and Opto-electronics at Tianjin University, and to cooperate in the training of postgraduates with Liaocheng University.
The university has always attached great importance to scientific research. It has built up 15 teaching and scientific research platforms at or above provincial level. Over the past few years, it has undertaken more than 280 projects at national, ministerial, or provincial level, winning more than 220 awards for scientific research achievements.
The university has also been promoting international exchanges and cooperation in recent years. It has established inter-school cooperation relations with over 50 universities and colleges in South Korea, Japan, Russia, Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
It also set up the world's largest and the only Asian Esperanto Museum by cooperating with Ĉina Esperanto-Ligo, building a platform for extensive international cooperation and exchanges.
