Qufu Normal University, formerly known as Shandong Normal Specialized Postsecondary College, was founded in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong province, in 1955. In 1956, the specialized post-secondary college was upgraded to Qufu Normal College and moved to Qufu, a county-level city in Jining. In November 1985, the college was renamed Qufu Normal University. In 2002, the Rizhao campus was set up.

With two campuses in Qufu and Rizhao, the university covers an area of 2,532 mu (168.8 hectares), with the total value of teaching and research equipment reaching 390 million yuan ($56.53 million).

By November 2018, the university had 87 majors for bachelor degrees, 11 doctoral degree programs for first-rank disciplines, 72 doctoral degree programs for second-rank disciplines, 25 master's degree programs for first-rank disciplines, 168 master's degree programs for second-rank disciplines, one authorized doctoral degree specialty, and 13 authorized master's degree specialties.

The three majors – engineering science, chemistry and mathematics – entered the top 1 percent in the global rankings set by Essential Science Indicators, also known as ESI, an authoritative analysis and evaluation tool for measuring scientific research performance. Five majors – engineering science, mathematics, Chinese history, chemistry, and Chinese language and literature – were selected among the provincial first-class disciplines in 2018 by the Shandong Provincial Education Department.

By giving full play to the advantages of being located in Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, a famous politician and thinker of the Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC), the university has formed its own characteristics and advantages. It established the only provincial-level collaborative innovation center in the humanities and social sciences – the Collaborative Innovation Center for Confucius and Shandong's Powerful Cultural Province Strategy.

Qufu Normal University was one of the first batch of Chinese universities which were allowed to enroll foreign students by the Ministry of Education. Since its establishment, it has established inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with 63 renowned universities and colleges in more than 10 countries and regions around the world, including the United States, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Canada. It has set up Confucius Institutes in Canada and South Korea to promote traditional Chinese culture.
