The Weihai campus of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) was founded in 1985 and covers an area of more than 1,860 mu (124 hectares). In 2014, the campus reached a cooperation agreement with the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to jointly develop the discipline of naval architecture and ocean engineering, marking the development of the campus entering a new stage.

By April 2018, the campus had 37 majors for bachelor degrees, shared 30 master's programs and 18 doctoral programs with the HIT's main campus in Harbin, and owned three independent master's programs: naval architecture and ocean engineering, marine science, and automotive engineering.

The majors – material science, engineering science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and environmental engineering – entered the top 1 percent in the global rankings set by the Essential Science Indicators, also known as ESI, an authoritative analysis and evaluation tool for measuring scientific research performance.

Centering on the national maritime power strategy and the needs of regional economic and social developmental, the campus has established more than 30 scientific research platforms and characteristic discipline teams at ministerial and provincial-level or above. It has the country's first maritime comprehensive testing ground in shallow sea, and an international joint research center for ocean engineering materials and deep processing technology.

During the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), the campus undertook 217 national scientific research projects and made 1,170 research achievements. It won second prize in the National Technology Invention Awards, two first prizes and one second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 24 other ministerial and provincial-level awards.

The campus has been expanding cooperation and exchanges with overseas educational institutions in recent years. It has established inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with more than 100 colleges and universities in the United States, Britain, France, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

HIT, founded in 1920, is attached to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and has three campuses, with the main campus in Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang province, and the other two in Weihai in Shandong province and Shenzhen in Guangdong province.

HIT was in the first batch of national key universities that were added to Project 985 (a Chinese project for founding world-class universities in the 21st century) and Project 211 (a Chinese government project for strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century).
