North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region raked in about 7.82 billion yuan ($1.16 billion) in tourism revenue throughout the May Day holiday, an increase of 78.81 percent over the same period last year, according to local authorities.

Over the four-day holiday from May 1 to May 4, the region received over 10.35 million domestic and foreign tourists, up 60.95 percent over last year.

With the continuous improvement of the region's transportation infrastructure and the rising popularity of "outskirts" tourism, more people chose to go on middle and long-distance self-driving tours.

Well-known tourist attractions like the Inner Mongolia Museum remain popular holiday attractions, while red tourism, ecological village tourism, and cultural tourism are also attracting large numbers of tourists.

This year, the integration of "Internet +" technology into various tourist attractions allowed tourists to buy tickets online more easily. The technology has also greatly improved the management efficiency and service quality of a number of scenic spots.
