A ceremony marking the start of the national pilot project to protect and restore the Ulan Suhai Lake basin ecosystem was held in Urad Front Banner, Bayannuur, a city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on April 16.

A total of 5.6 billion yuan ($834.43 million) is being invested in the project, which will mainly consist of the systematic management of deserts, mines, forests, grass, farmland, wetlands, floods, etc., in the Ulan Suhai Lake basin through the implementation of seven major sub-projects. The goal is to enhance the lake's ecosystem, ensure water security in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, and build an ecological security barrier in northern China.
