Founded in 1958, Inner Mongolia University for Nationalities is a key university co-built by the People's Government of Inner Mongolia autonomous region and the National Ethnic Affairs Commission. Over the past 60 years, almost 180,000 students have graduated from the university.

Located in Tongliao, in eastern Inner Mongolia, the university has two campuses – one in Huolinhe Avenue and the other in Xilamulun Avenue – which cover 1.04 million square meters. Its fixed assets are worth 1.03 billion yuan ($153.6 million), including 350 million yuan in teaching and research equipment. About 1.7 million books are available at the library.

The university now has 22,015 full-time students, 365 overseas students, and 1,961 faculty members. Bachelor and master's degree programs are offered at the university. Traditional Mongolian medicine is a key specialty of the university and a relevant doctoral project was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2012.

It has one affiliated hospital – the Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia University for Nationalities with 1,500 inpatient beds.

Overseas students can apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship for International Students at the university. It has also maintained cooperative ties with 32 overseas universities and institutions in countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, including Buryat State University in Russia, the National University of Mongolia, University College Cork in Ireland, Weber State University in the United States, Joetsu University of Education in Japan, Kangwon National University in South Korea, and Eurasia Pacific Uninet.

Remarkable achievements have been seen due to the cooperation and exchanges in traditional Mongolian medicine between the university and the National University of Mongolia as relevant research and development (R&D) laboratories, hospitals and pharmaceutical factories have been co-built.

In addition, the International Scholarly Exchange Curriculum (ISEC), a program for undergraduates funded by the China Scholarship Council, is available at the university. A joint training program between the university and Thomas University in the United States has also been developed.
