Repurposed BNU Zhuhai campus approved by Beijing

Beijing Normal University Zhuhai's (BNUZ) campus will be phased out until 2024 when a new campus with an updated focus becomes fully operational in Tangjiawan of Xiangzhou District.

Approval of the new campus was announced by the Ministry of Education on April 9. It is to be constructed by the Guangdong and Zhuhai governments and BNU in line with a tripartite agreement signed in August 2017, according to the approval announcement.

The three parties will establish a high-end technology and education, research, and innovation center with global influence on culture and health. In order to meet major tasks of the Belt & Road Initiative, it will help the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area integrate development, raise the college's status, and serve local economic and social advancements.

Its new campus will align with BNU standards. Specifically, it will closely follow the trajectory of strategic emerging industries and frontier international academic technology advances. High-quality resources at home and abroad will be attracted to train innovative top-notch talents, according to school leaders.

The new campus will occupy parts of BNUZ, and take over some buildings of Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. UIC opened its own new campus at 2000 Jintong Road, Tangjiawan in 2017 and 2018.

BNU, a prestigious school with more than a century of history, opened the Zhuhai branch along with the city government in 2001. Covering over 5,000 mu (333 hectares), it provides modern, high-quality teaching and living facilities in an attractive, tranquil environment.

After the new BNU Zhuhai campus starts recruiting students, BNUZ will reduce class sizes and end enrollments in 2021, according to the approval.
