The automotive industry in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has maintained a rapid growth in recent years, and a relatively complete industrial pattern has taken shape in the region.

Boasting many influential automobile brands like Wuling, Baojun, and Chevrolet, Guangxi is now home to 347 automotive enterprises above a designated size. The total assets of automotive enterprises in the region recorded 166.71 billion yuan ($24.84 billion), providing jobs to 135,000 people. The production and sales volume of Shanghai General Motors Wuling in Liuzhou has ranked first for 12 consecutive years in the country’s mini car industry, while the diesel engines produced by Guangxi Yuchai Group have maintained the highest production and sales volume for more than 10 years in the same industry.

In 2017, the total output value of Guangxi’s automotive enterprises reached 284.2 billion yuan, accounting for 10.47 of the region’s total, an increase of 7.33 percent year-on-year. The vehicle output totaled 2.49 million, a year-on-year growth of 1.29 percent. The sales volume hit 2.46 million, growing 0.89 percent year-on-year, of which the MPV production totaled 890,300, 43.39 percent of the country’s total, ranking first in the country.

To promote new leap-forward development in its automotive industry, the region unveiled an action plan on Dec 28, 2017. According to the plan, Guangxi was expected to achieve a total sales income of 340 billion yuan in the automotive industry, the annual production and sales volume was estimated to reach 3.2 million, and it is forecast that the number of automobile enterprises with sales revenue exceeding 5 billion yuan would reach 10 by 2020.

The plan stated that from 2018 to 2020, the region aims to set up a modern automotive industry system with Guangxi characteristics, centering on promoting development quality and efficiency. At the same time, Guangxi will highlight the leading role of some key enterprises, and boost the independent ability of research and development, while also strengthening its comprehensive integration level of automobile accessories and spare parts. In addition, the region aims to promote the coordinated development of vehicles and spare parts, giving priority to new energy vehicles, and accelerating industrial restructuring and upgrading to push forward developments in its automotive industry.

In the following three years, Guangxi will focus on the reform and restructuring of its auto industry, by strengthening innovation, research, and development. In addition, it will promote brand building and accelerate the pace of its globalization efforts. In terms of new product development, Guangxi will continue to enrich the range of its automobile products, including trucks, highway passenger vehicles, urban buses, sightseeing buses, mini-trucks, saloon cars, MPV, SUV, and special automobiles, as well as new energy vehicles.

The region will also develop a scientific and reasonable layout to further consolidate Liuzhou’s status as a production base of passenger cars, business cars, and special vehicles. Additionally, Guangxi will push Guigang and Qinzhou as production bases for automobiles and light trucks, as well as promote Nanning and Guilin as new vehicle and coach production bases.
