Improved social governance increases happiness

Zhuhai has made great strides in education, healthcare, and social security by constantly improving its social administration and increasing government spending.

Last year, Zhuhai registered 2,422 social organizations, 82 private social organizations, and 2,248 volunteer service organizations with 353,000 volunteers.

Efforts have been made to become a pilot city by building "basic units of urban social governance". Also, due to a string of reforms in rural grassroots governance and effective urban management, Zhuhai was honored as a National Demonstration City for Social Governance Innovation.

In addition, Xiangzhou District was named a national experimental area for social governance and service innovation. The district's exploration process features high public participation. For example, Lu Ziyin in Xingye Community, Xiangzhou makes a living by recycling rubbish, and he now has additional duties after volunteering to be a security worker tasked with collecting and reporting security information to local police. Many other seniors like him are contributing to society in such a way.

The ultimate goal of these measures is to increase Zhuhai people's sense of well-being, happiness, and security. To this end, social spending increased 12.9 percent to 40 billion yuan ($6 billion) in 2018, with pension benefits, basic living allowances, and housing prices all improving.

According to statistics, 47,000 urban jobs were created in Zhuhai last year. A number of news schools were built as well, and others were renovated, adding 3,838 kindergarten seats and 7,860 public school seats.

The Sixth Plenary Session of the Eighth CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee on Jan 10 emphasized the establishment of a social management system that calls for joint efforts in building, governing, and sharing benefits. The committee also stressed that public services should be of the same quality in all areas of the city.
