The Hainan government signed a cooperation framework agreement with Northwest China's Gansu province in Haikou, Hainan province on Feb 25. Both governors attended the signing ceremony.

According to the agreement, the two parties will begin cooperating in trade, finance, tourism, science, education, environmental protection, and specific industries.

Tang Renjian, governor of Gansu province, said that Hainan has succeeded in its responsibility to create a pilot free trade zone and free trade port with Chinese characteristics. Joint efforts have been made to carry out the central government’s directives while gaining plenty of practical experience. Hainan and Gansu both offer crucial strategic support along the Maritime Silk Road and act as transport hubs of the Silk Road Economic Belt. They plan to seize upon the opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative in order to carry out cooperative projects.

Shen Xiaoming, governor of Hainan, warmly welcomed the Gansu delegation and thanked them for their long-term support for Hainan. He said that Hainan is devoted to comprehensively strengthening reform with help from the central government. The two provinces are in a critical stage of history, and both need to make efforts to strengthen collaboration, take full advantage of their respective economic advantages, and continue to play important roles in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The executive vice governors of both provinces introduced a number of economic and social development conditions and made considerations for their future cooperation.
