Set up in 1992, Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone received approval from the State Council to be the first national-level zone of its kind in Hunan province in 2000. Sitting at the heartland of the open economic corridor in the east of Changsha, the provincial capital city, the zone is next to the central urban area of Changsha to its west, and it borders Huanghua International Airport, Changsha Airport Economic Demonstration Zone, and Huanghua Comprehensive Bonded Zone to the east. To the north, the zone is adjacent to Songya Lake Wetland Park, the largest of its kind in Hunan. Changsha High-speed Rail Station and Huangxing Logistics Base lies to its south.
Aiming to “take the lead in setting up a national smart manufacturing demonstration area and building a 500 billion yuan ($73.9 billion) national park”, the zone strives to develop its smart manufacturing and modern service, making the zone a core growth pole for the industrial development in Central China.
Over the past 26 years, a characteristic industrial pattern has taken shape in the zone, focusing on engineering machinery, automobile and spare parts manufacturing, electronic information, and military and civilian integration. The engineering machinery industry, led by Sany Heavy Industries, is speeding up the construction of a world-class engineering machinery industry cluster with far-reaching brand awareness and market coverage.
In 2017, the gross industrial output value above designated size totaled 234.85 billion yuan, and its added value of industries above a designated scale reached 53.88 billion yuan. A total of 93 enterprises with an annual output value of more than 100 million yuan have settled in the zone. It is expected that a national smart manufacturing demonstration area will be built completely in the zone by 2025.
