Establishment of Caofeidian Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved by the State Council in 2013, with a planned area of 14.48 square kilometers. The zone is located at the core area of the Bohai Rim Economic Circle and neighbors Beijing and Tianjin municipalities.
It now has five major industries: equipment manufacturing, iron and steel, port logistics, chemicals and high-tech industries. The high-tech sector, for example, focuses on the development of energy conservation, environmental protection, comprehensive utilization of key resources, biomedicine and new energy and materials.
In 2013, the zone's fiscal income reached nearly 4.7 billion yuan ($692.2 million) and its total tax revenues exceeded 3.2 billion yuan. By the end of that year, the zone had more than 17,000 employees.
