Sightseeing at Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is the largest existing and the best-preserved royal garden in China, and was one of the “Three Hills and Five Gardens” in the western suburbs of Beijing. It was designed as a summer resort for Empress Dowager Cixi in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value. Recently, this palace has attracted thousands of tourists hoping to catch sight of the setting sun shining through the Seventeen-Arch Bridge over the frozen Kunming Lake.
