Inheritor of Suzhou embroider Yao Huifen, along with nine other inheritors of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, was recently named as Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Person of the Year 2018, according to China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Yao grew up in China's hometown of embroidery – Zhenhu town in Suzhou New District and learnt embroidering from two renowned embroider masters: Mou Zhihong and Ren Huixian.

The Suzhou embroiderer is good at integrating disordered stitching embroidery into traditional Chinese ink painting and many people tend to mistake her embroider works for beautiful paintings.

Sponsored by Party newspaper Guangming Daily, the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Person of the Year is aimed at rewarding people who have made remarkable contributions to the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage over the past year.
