Founded in 1960, Longhua Hospital, under Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of the earliest traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinical centers in China. Over the past 50 years, Longhua Hospital has been developing TCM with western medicine technology and is widely recognized for its state-of-the-art expertise in TCM treatment.

Located in Xuhui district, Shanghai, Longhua Hospital and its Pudong branch cover an area of 78.65 mu (5.24 hectares) and offer 1,250 inpatient beds. Annual outpatient visits total over 3.56 million and the number of inpatient discharges is around 54,000. The general hospital possesses over 50 clinical, technological and medical departments, as well as an array of advanced devices, including DR, CT, ECT and MRI scanners.

As a research institution, Longhua Hospital houses three state-level key disciplines, nine key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM), six National clinical specialties and 13 SATCM specialties, all of which are led by the brightest minds in TCM research and treatment. 

The hospital is home to many famous TCM experts, including one nationally acknowledged TCM master, 40 experienced tutors of TCM inheritance, 32 famous Shanghai TCM doctors and 42 supervisors of doctoral students. Longhua Hospital is also in charge of the research of nine TCM schools and specialties.

In 2001, Longhua Hospital created the world's first workshop for seasoned TCM doctors, which was promoted nationwide within a short period of time. To date, the hospital has built 36 similar workshops, 15 of which are now state-level. In June 2018, the hospital was accredited as an Academic Medical Center Hospital by the Joint Commission International for its high standards of patient care, medical education, human subject research and organization management. Longhua Hospital was the world's first TCM hospital to win such accreditation.
