In the first ten months of 2018, Hainan’s internet industry brought in a business revenue of 50.81 billion yuan ($7.41 billion), surging by 44.7 percent compared with the same period last year. Over the past years, the internet industry has maintained an average growth rate of over 30 percent, the fastest among the province’s 12 pillar industries.

Since the establishment of China (Hainan) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the province has lay out over one million square of development zones for the internet industry, which absorbed over 10 billion yuan worth of investment. Over 100 renowned internet giants, including Microsoft, ZTE, Huawei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba, have set up regional headquarters or R&D centers in the southernmost offshore island of China.

The province is also doubling down on the integration between the Internet and other industries including tourism, agriculture, healthcare, education, logistics, finance, e-commerce, entertaining, real estate, service outsourcing, sports and e-sports.

For instance, Hainan has unveiled an action plan to speed up Internet hardware construction, in a bid to bend in the new trends of combining tourism with "Internet Plus." Known for its tropical climate and alluring seas, Hainan is often regarded as one of the hottest tourist destinations in China. In recent years, Hainan is seeking marketing innovation and offering smart services to enhance traveling experience for tourists.

The province's scenic spots were completely covered by 4G networks; Wi-Fi was available at 95 percent of the tourist attractions; A self-service terminal named "Best Airport" has been introduced at Haikou Meilan International Airport for visitors to look up useful information.

Additionally, the tourism commission is running ads on TripAdvisor, the biggest travel website in the world, helping to a 55 percent surge of searches about Hainan.
