Suzhou institute develops first super-resolution microscope in China

A Suzhou institute has developed the first super-resolution microscope in China, local media reported on Dec 26.

The optical instrument, independently created by the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), recently passed CAS's acceptance.

"The super-resolution microscope has reached the standards of international high-end biological micro-optical instrument," said Chai Zhifang, academician of CAS and head of the acceptance group.

Chai added that it will improve China's heavy reliance on imported high-end biological micro-optical instruments and is of great importance to cutting-edge basic research in biomedicine.

High or super-resolution microscopes are crucial to achieving original research results in biology and medical sciences.

According to Tang Yuguo, director of the Suzhou institute, their super-resolution microscope and its core parts have been utilized by many institutes at home and abroad, including Stanford University and the University of Tokyo, and some achievements have been made by these institutes with the help of the newly-developed instrument.

Tang revealed that they will begin mass production and implement the device in other fields in the near future.

Established in the Suzhou New District in 2008, the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology is CAS's only branch institute dedicated to developing biomedical instruments, reagents and biomaterials and has made a series of achievements throughout its history
