On the premise of protecting the ecological environment, the province focuses on the development of marine tourism, medical tourism, shopping tourism, convention and exhibition tourism, sport tourism, rural tourism, forest tourism, RV camping tourism and featured urban tourism.

Popular tourist destinations include Wuzhizhou Island, Boundary Island, Nanshan Mountain, Dongtian Park, Yanoda Rainforest and more.

The off-shore duty-free program is another big draw. Domestic and overseas tourists can make duty-free purchases if they spend no more than 30,000 yuan ($4,315) per person within one year, up from the current limit of 16,000 yuan, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on its website. There will be no restrictions on purchase frequency.

Some medical apparatus and instruments will be included on the duty-free product list, including hearing aids, visual training machines, and household respiratory support equipment. Each consumer can buy a maximum of two of these items each time, according to the statement.

Visits by overseas tourists to China's southernmost island province of Hainan reached about 1.1 million in the first 11 months of the year, up 12.6 percent year on year, according to local authorities.

Hainan is expected to attract more than 80 million tourists a year by 2020, including 1.2 million from overseas.
