Holding more than 100,000 artworks, the museum showcases the distant, dignified, varied and colorful Chinese civilization, elegant and magnificent Jianghan (the confluence area of the Yangtze and Han rivers) and regional culture through its permanent exhibitions which feature cultural relics, ceramic art, paintings and calligraphic arts of the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties in the Wuhan area.

The eclectic holdings of the museum primarily consist of ceramics, bronzes, paintings, calligraphy, jade, enamels, seals, and delicate carved curios made of bamboo, wood, and ivory - either unearthed relics of great worth to archaeological studies or extant treasures of superb craftsmanship handed down from ancient times. Among them are both exquisite items fashioned by craftsmen serving the Qing court and artistic masterpiece from past dynasties.
