Shandong is a major equipment manufacturing province with a sound industrial foundation and strong research and development (R&D) abilities. Its equipment manufacturing industrial scale is the third largest in the country.

The prime operating revenue of high-end equipment manufacturing enterprises with annual industrial output value above 20 million yuan in Shandong province totaled 1.11 trillion yuan ($160.34 billion) in 2016. The number of intelligent equipment manufacturing enterprises exceeded 2,300 by the end of 2016, with prime operating revenue surpassing 800 billion yuan, the second highest in the nation.

The added value of the equipment manufacturing industry of Shandong province in 2017 increased by 11 percent compared to that of 2016. The industry's sales revenue in 2017 totaled 3.86 trillion yuan, accounting for 27 percent of the province's total industrial revenue.

The advanced equipment manufacturing industry in Shandong has laid a solid foundation for the development of intelligent manufacturing, which in return can promote the upgrading and transformation of the equipment manufacturing industry, as well as accelerate the conversion of the province's old and new kinetic energy.

Shandong issued a development plan (2017-22) for intelligent manufacturing in September 2017.

It cultivated the first batch of 60 provincial intelligent manufacturing pilot demonstration projects in 2017, and managed to take over 13 of the national intelligent manufacturing standardization and new model application projects, with 130 million yuan in funding. The number of its funded projects put it at the national forefront. By the end of 2017, 23 projects in Shandong had been listed as national pilot demonstration sites for intelligent manufacturing, accounting for 11 percent of the national total, again ranking first in the country.
