Inner Mongolia autonomous region will focus on the development of six emerging industries – modern equipment manufacturing, new materials, biopharmaceuticals, electronic information, environmental protection and military-civilian integration – according to a press conference held by the regional government Nov 28.

By 2020, the industrial output value of emerging industries in the region is aimed to reach 275 billion yuan ($40 billion), accounting for 13 percent of the total, making emerging industries a new engine for the region’s restructuring toward high-quality development.

Modern Equipment Manufacturing

Inner Mongolia has a competitive strength in this industry and has achieved annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles, 450,000 automobile engines, 10,000 railway wagons and 6,500 sets of wind turbines.

Next, with a focus on new energy vehicles, the region will strive to develop a whole industrial chain covering power batteries, motors, electronic control systems, powertrains, accessories, and vehicle design and development.

In addition, equal attention will be paid to the digitalization of the industry, and high-end equipment manufacturing.

New Materials

The region is capable of annually producing 110,000 tons of rare earth compounds, 27,000 tons of polysilicon, 20,000 tons of monocrystalline silicon, and 3,500 tons of sapphires, which are among the highest figures in China.

The region will next concentrate on developing industries in rare earth new materials and photovoltaic materials, as well as cutting-edge new materials such as high-end metals, alloys and polymers.

Biopharmaceuticals

The biopharmaceuticals industry in Inner Mongolia is mainly categorized as biological products, chemical medicine and traditional Mongolian medicine. Its advantages in these sectors lie mainly in animal vaccines, antibiotics and traditional Mongolian medicine.

The government has promised to promote innovative development of medicines, in a bid to create a biopharmaceutical production base.

Electronic Information

In recent years, thanks to China's sweeping development in the big data industry, Inner Mongolia has accelerated its development and upgraded its infrastructure in the electronic information industry. As a result, great progress have been seen at big data centers in the cities of Hohhot, Ordos, Chifeng and Ulaanqab, and in big data firms based in the region, including Skyworth Electronics, TCL Group and Yuansheng Photoelectric.

The region will further push the industry's development through introducing electronic manufacturing projects, promoting big data applications, and building high-standard information infrastructure.

Environmental Protection

Inner Mongolia is taking a lead in energy-consumption projects in mining, chemicals, coal power and metallurgy, giving it great potential in the development of environmental protection.

The region will focus next on the comprehensive utilization of resources and promote advanced energy-conservation and environmentally friendly technologies.

Military-civilian Integration

Through years of development, a series of military-civilian integration projects have been launched in the region. With a focus on transferring military sectors into civilian ones, the region will develop such industries as nuclear fuel, specialty fibers, shielding materials and space information applications and support the construction of a national-level military-civilian integration demonstration area in Baotou, as well as some military-civilian industrial parks, including the Alshaa Defense Technology Industrial Park.
