The world is urbanizing at an alarming rate and the proportion of global urban population is expected to reach 60 percent by 2030, according to Maimunah Mohd Sharif, undersecretary general of the United Nations and executive director of the UN Habitat.
The UN Habitat strongly advocates smart, resilient urban planning and designs that make cities safe, inclusive and sustainable, Sharif said during her video address at the opening ceremony of the Global Mayor's Forum, the 4th Guangzhou Awards, and the 2018 Urban Innovation Conference.
Energy-efficient, low-carbon urban services and compact city planning are crucial to promoting local economic development and reducing the negative environmental impact of urban development, she said.
The three-day events, with the slogan "Global Openness and Inclusive Innovation", are held in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province.
