The Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region holds about 70,000 artifacts and fossils, spanning an extended time period of 800,000 years. Covering an area of 40,000 square meters, it sits in the political, cultural, and commercial center of Nanning, the provincial capital of Guangxi. The rail-and-balustrade building facade is designed in the architectural style typical of the ethnic Zhuang residence. Attached to the exhibition building is a cultural garden which accommodates architectural examples of the ethnic groups and provides cultural performances and dining services.

The museum was established as the Museum of Guangxi Province on July 1,1934, and took its present name in 1958 with the founding of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Ever since the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) Guangxi has been a crucial political region in China. The museum is witness to many historical developments and cultural changes: hand axes in the Old Stone Age, bronzes during the Qin and Han (206 BC-AD 220) dynasties, stoneware in the Song dynasty (960-1279) and painting and calligraphy in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
