Opera Australia will bring Puccini's timeless tragic tale Madama Butterfly to Zhuhai Opera House on Oct 25 and 26 as the finishing touch to its China tour after performances in Qingdao, Tianjin, and Shenzhen.

One of the world's greatest operas, Madama Butterfly was adapted from the short story Madame Butterfly by John Luther Long with reference to the semi-autobiographical novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti.

It tells the ever-popular and heart-stirring story of Japanese girl Ciocio-san ("butterfly" in Japanese) who falls in love with dashing American naval officer Pinkerton. Giving up her family and faith, she risks all in marriage but only gets abandonment and betrayal in return.

From the lovers' first rapturous embrace to the intense finale, the opera offers stunning music, including the famous aria One Fine Day, Japanese ballads, and the rhyme of the American national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner.

The story will be interpreted by a glittering cast supported by the China Central Opera choir under the direction of Grammy Award winner Muhai Tang.
