Shanxi Medical University has more than 1,600 teachers, of whom 1,300 are postgraduate tutors. Many teachers in Shanxi Medical University have been awarded national or provincial awards. Among the staff, there are many talented professionals, along with national experts and scientists. 

The university offers a complete education system with five national characteristic specialties and 26 undergraduate specialties, among which there is one national key discipline, 13 key clinical specialties and 15 provincial characteristic key disciplines. And it also hosts national and provincial institutes such as a key laboratory, teaching centers and teaching & research platforms. In addition, it has a complete system of degree authorization for postgraduate students.

There are more than 19,200 full-time students, including around 15,300 ordinary undergraduate students and more than 70 international students. Since the establishment of the university, it has trained more than 120,000 medical professionals represented by Zhao Xuefang, the first winner of the "Bethune Medal"; Xu Jianguo and Tian Zhigang, academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Yang Hui, winner of the "Nightingale Medal". In recent years, the rate of undergraduate enrollment has been over 30 percent, and the employment rate has stayed above 90 percent. The survey shows that employers' satisfaction with personnel training at the university is over 90 percent.

The university actively carries out international exchanges and cooperation, as well as teacher-student exchanges. It has established partnerships with universities and institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Russia, and Australia, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. It has implemented the "overseas training plan for young backbone teachers", "overseas training plan for discipline management business" and "overseas training program for doctoral candidates". In 2017, the university enrolled 77 international students from 13 countries with clinical medicine degrees, marking a new chapter in its efforts to attract international students.
