Suzhou's rosewood sculpture has a long history. It is characterized by its simple designs, bold strokes, delicate craftsmanship and clear polishing.

When making the Suzhou rosewood sculpture, the wood must be dried first. Then traditional mortise and tenon structure is used to control the expansion, contraction, distortion and cracking of the sculpture. Besides beds, cupboards, tables and sofas, more rosewood decorations are used in luxurious bedrooms, dining rooms, studies and living rooms. These include boxes, trays, supports, side tables and screens, as well as holders, cages and covers made from carving, relief and piercing. In addition, some sculptures feature people, animals and flowers. There are also chopsticks, stamp boxes, book holders, bookmarks, boards, tea trays and other souvenirs. The sculptures fall under nearly 1,000 categories.

In 1954, Suzhou Rosewood Sculpture Plant was founded. Its products were sold to more than 50 countries and regions in Southeast Asia, Europe and the U.S. through the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. More than 20 rosewood sculptures have won various contests in China. In 1993, 15 pieces of furniture including rosewood beds, cupboards and antic-style cupboards were made for Diaoyutai Guest House to serve state leaders. With their delicate craftsmanship, they were praised by the State Council.
