Nantong First People’s Hospital grew out of the Nantong State Christian hospital, built in 1907. It was taken over by the government in 1951. The hospital was certified as a Class B, Grade Three comprehensive hospital in 1994 and upgraded to a Class A, Grade Three general hospital in 2008. By the end of 2011, it covered an area of 41,000 square meters, with a construction area of 89,000 square meters. The medical staff consists of 1,366 people, and there are 1,200 hospital beds, 32 wards, 32 clinic disciplines, 24 medical and technical departments and 36 special outpatient clinics. Both the Nantong clinical laboratory center and the radio-immunology center are situated in the hospital.

The hospital has five provincial key clinical disciplines - namely the departments of cardiology, orthopedics, gynecology and medical imaging and interventional radiology. The hospital has several municipal key clinic disciplines and medical and technical departments, including its departments of neurology, cardiothoracic surgery, emergency, urinary surgery, general surgery, intensive care medicine, ophthalmology, imaging, intervention therapy , radiotherapy, pathology , endocrinology,  anesthesiology, and pediatrics. It is also home to a medical clinical laboratory and is known for cardiac intervention and minimally invasive surgery, diagnosis and treatment by digestive endoscope, and critical illness rescue.
