NANJING -- A battery storage power plant with 100 MW power and 200 MWh capacity was put into operation Wednesday in Zhenjiang city in East China's Jiangsu Province.
The battery storage power plant is by far the world's largest in terms of power, according to Jiangsu Electric Power Company of the State Grid, the plant operator.
After its operation, the plant will provide a daily electricity supply of 400 MWh, which can meet the demands of 170,000 residents in Zhenjiang, said Wang Xu, a spokesperson for Jiangsu Electric.
Liu Gang, a researcher with an institute affiliated to Jiangsu Electric, said: "The battery storage power plant in Zhenjiang works like a battery charger. It charges up during quiet hours of electricity consumption and delivers power during peak hours."
Battery storage power plants, which can effectively address power shortage during peak hours, have also been in operation in Shanghai and Guangdong, according to Liu.
