Over 3,000 volunteers gathered to ride 20 kilometers in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, as part of events to mark World Environment Day, on June 5.

The cycling activity aimed to increase Hohhot residents’ awareness of environmental issues and encourage them to choose green modes of transport.

Not only is cycling good for us, but it also produces no emissions, said one volunteer at the event.

Hohhot government has undertaken a series of pollution control measures over the past several years in an effort to improve the local environment, said Zhou Qiang, vice-mayor of Hohhot,  at the opening ceremony of the cycling activity.

The city’s efforts to control pollution have paid dividends. Last year, Hohhot’s air quality was rated as “low risk” on 255 days of the year. The city has also improved its capacity to treat sewage from 260,000 tons to 520,000 tons.
