Zhuhai People's (Renmin) Hospital is the only one in the city selected to develop a state-level Comprehensive Stroke Center. The CSC is to advance the study of strokes though multi-disciplinary and hierarchical diagnosis and treatment.

The honor confirms Renmin Hospital's three-time designation as a base for stroke screening, prevention, and treatment. The National Health & Family Planning Commission first issued the title in 2011. Its Stroke Prevention Project Committee further recognized Zhuhai Renmin as a Stroke Prevention & Treatment Center in 2015.

The organization awarded the certificate during the China Stroke Conference 2018 in Beijing from May 3 to 6. It has sponsored the event in conjunction with the Chinese Association of Geriatric Research and Chinese Preventive Medicine Association since 2011.

More than 400 domestic and overseas experts, scholars, and honored hospital leaders gathered to review academic achievements and practical success in the field, publicizing them for wider applications.

Forty high-end forums explored prevention and treatment of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, screening of high-risk patients, constructing a stroke care network, and clinical treatment. Comprehensive management and achievements were also emphasized.

The Report on Stroke Prevention & Treatment in China 2017 and Chinese Guidelines for Prevention & Treatment of Stroke were released during the conference. Also issued were references for clinical scientific research and a quality regulatory basis for constructing stroke centers.

Headquartered in Wanzaisha of Old Xiangzhou, Zhuhai Renmin Yiyuan (hospital) is a top-rated Grade-III Class-A comprehensive medical institution. It has a history of more than six decades and long-term commitment to reducing strokes. Due to its efforts, more than 35,000 Zhuhai residents have received free stroke screenings and follow-up services.

Li Zhaohui, hospital executive vice-director, pledged support for the national stroke treatment system. He foresees a network integrating telemedicine and hierarchical diagnosis and treatment based on regional collaboration. Stroke patients will have access to efficient, comprehensive medical care including emergency treatment, standardized diagnosis and treatment, and rehabilitation. The goal is to further reduce the incidence, severity, and death rate from stroke.

Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident or cerebrovascular insult, is a "brain attack" that occurs when blood-flow to an area of the cerebrum is cut off, causing cells to die from oxygen deprivation. There are two main types of stroke: ischemic, caused by a lack of blood flow; and hemorrhagic, instigated by bleeding.
