Founded in 1935, Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC), formerly known as Shanghai Mercy Hospital, is now a grade-three and class-A mental health specialized hospital integrating medical services, education, research, disease prevention, rehabilitation, counseling and foreign exchanges. Since 2006, it has been affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
With its main hospital in Xuhui district and a branch in Minhang district, SMHC features clinical departments involving General Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Juvenile Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Clinical Psychology, Infection and other fields, equipped with 1878 approved beds (2141 beds actually available).
Besides, it established the Shanghai Institute of Mental Health (SIMH) in 1981. The institute consists of 14 research departments such as biochemistry, genetics, neurophysiology, child behavior, TCM and so on. It is also the teaching hospital of Fudan University and Tongji University.
