Founded in 1954, Shanghai Normal University has a range of disciplines in humanities, the social sciences, natural and applied sciences, and engineering. It has two main campuses, at Xuhui and Fengxian. Most overseas students are at the Xuhui campus, near Xujiahui, one of Shanghai’s most prosperous and convenient areas. 

The university is particularly strong in the liberal arts and is geared to Shanghai’s economic and cultural development. It ranks among China’s top 90 universities and is at 181th place in Asia on the QS World University Rankings. It grants bachelor’s degrees in 84 disciplines, master degrees in 183 disciplines, and doctorates in 48 disciplines, and has six post-doctoral research stations. Its two libraries hold more than 3.3 million books. 

The school has a staff of around 3,000 and more than 40,000 students, among whom 2,000 are overseas students.

The university cooperates with more than 200 universities and educational institutions around the world. It has been quite active in Chinese language teaching in foreign countries, with three Confucius Institutes abroad established in conjunction with the University of Missouri in the US, Fukuyama University in Japan, and the University of Botswana in Botswana.
