By the end of 2016, the autonomous region was home to 21 airports. The passenger throughput had reached 17.99 million, with cargo throughput reaching 74,916 tons.
Hohhot Baita International Airport is the largest air transport hub in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, with airlines radiating to almost all the provincial capitals and small-to-medium cities in China.
The airport is classed at 4E level. Its terminal building, covering 50,000 square meters, can process 900 people per hour. By 2013, the airport offered 132 air routes, 125 of which were domestic, accessible to 63 cities.
Hohhot’s new airport project was approved by the State Council and the Central Military Commission in August 2016. The airfield and terminal building of the new airport are expected to handle 28 million passengers and 320,000 tons of cargo by 2030.
The new airport's main projects include the terminal building measuring 260,000 square meters, airport grounds with 124 gates, a 50,000-sq m transport transfer center and a 95,000-sq m park area. A total of 24,239 billion yuan ($3,663 billion) will be invested into the project.
The airport is located to the east of Hohhot, about 14 km from the urban area. It is 30 minutes to the airport from Hohhot.
Baotou Erliban Airport is one of the largest airports in Inner Mongolia and is classified at 4D level. It has flights to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, and Xi'an among many other mainland cities. The airport is approximately 23 km from the downtown area.
Ordos Ejin Horoo Airport offers connections with most major cities in China, such as Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Harbin, Chengdu, and Kunming and is accessible via a shuttle bus from downtown which takes one hour.
Hulunbuir Hailar Airport is an international airport in the city’s Hailar district. Flights from the airport connect Hailar with Beijing, Hohhot, Harbin, Chifeng and many other cities.
Bayanhot Airport is one of the three airports of Alshaa League in western Inner Mongolia, the other two being Alshaa Right Banner Badanjilin Airport and Ejine Banner Taolai Airport. The three airports form a commuter airport network that connects the three banners of Alxa League, which cover an area of 272,000 square km of the Gobi Desert. Besides, Bayanhot Airport also has flights to/from Hohhot, Xi’an and Tianjin.
Bayannuur Tianjitai Airport is a Class-4C airport, 33 km from the center of Bayannuur. Opened in 2011, it has flights to/from Beijing, Qingdao, Tianjin, Hohhot and Xi’an.
Chifeng Yulong Airport is located in the city of Chifeng and has flights to/from many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Baotou, Dalian, Hailaar, Hohhot, Shenyang, Hangzhou, and Harbin.
Ereenhot Saiwusu International Airport is 27 km southeast of the city of Ereenhot and has flights to/from Beijing, Hohhot and Ulan Bator in Mongolia.
Manzhouli Xijiao Airport has flights to/from Changchun, Guangzhou, Beijing, Hefei, Qingdao, Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Wuxi, Shanghai, Harbin, as well as Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk Krai in Russia.
