Guizhou Minzu University, founded on May 17, 1951, is one of the first minorities-oriented universities in China and is a key provincial higher education institute jointly sponsored by the People's Government of Guizhou Province and the State Commission for Nationalities.

The university received a straight-A score in the Undergraduate Level Teaching Appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education, and it is a higher education institute who admits overseas students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship.

Guizhou Minzu University is one of the earliest universities to have qualifications for accepting foreign students in Guizhou. In 2014, the university was awarded qualifications in Chinese government scholarship for foreign students.

The College of International Education at Guizhou Minzu University was founded in 2013, and is responsible for the teaching and management of foreign students. The college has four divisions: the General Office, the Academic Management Section, the Foreign Students' Management Section and the Chinese Language Education Centre. There are nine teachers in total, including one professor, three vice-professors and five teaching assistants.
