Recently, the Changchun tractor plant in Changchun has been attracting a lot of attention because it will be transformed into a culture and science park.

According to the Government Work Report of Changchun, the reconstruction of the plant site will be listed as a priority on the government work agenda, indicating that the site will have a new appearance in 2018.

The plant was born in the wave of industrialization in Northeast China in the 1950s. It was the largest roller tractor manufacturing base in China, and witnessed much of China's industrial development.

The plant was a star enterprise in Changchun with high production and advanced technologies. It was well-equipped with support facilities, providing good welfare and high wages for its thousands of employees.

However, as China's market-oriented economy developed, the plant said goodbye to its glory-days due to unsuccessful business transformation and went bankrupt in 2006.

In recent years, there have been many voices supporting reconstruction of the plant to create value and protect the environment, avoiding wasting land resources.

The government has come up with several programs to revitalize the site including building it into another 798 Art Zone, a well-known art zone in Beijing constructed from dilapidated factories.

Workers are now carrying out reconstruction procedures including collecting information about old buildings on the site, security checks and final program selection. It is expected that the new site will open to the public soon.
