The grand dance drama Zhaojun was staged at the 19th China Shanghai International Arts Festival (CSIAF) on Oct 24 and 25.

The dance drama, performed by Hohhot National Perform Arts Group, was adapted from the story of Wang Zhaojun (52-15 BC) who lived during the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD), one of the four renowned beauties of ancient China who married into the Xiongnu ethnic group. The dance drama depicts the beauty and bravery of Zhaojun and her efforts to create a peaceful relationship between the Han people and Xiongnu people.

"Wang Zhaojun is a household name in Inner Mongolia autonomous region. The annual Zhaojun Culture Festival and Zhaojun's Tomb in Hohhot have become a tourist attraction in Hohhot and the wider Inner Mongolia autonomous region," said Li Shali, Party secretary of Hohhot National Perform Arts Group.

It is hoped that the performance of Zhaojun at CSIAF will help build a bridge for cultural exchanges between Shanghai and Inner Mongolia, and present opportunities for the world to get to know Inner Mongolia.

Hohhot National Perform Arts Group will also perform in 10 additional shows during the festival, which will close on Nov 19.
